The thorough renovation of Tallink City Hotel, which occupies the legendary “Teenindusmaja” (service centre) building built in 1974 in the heart of Tallinn, lasted almost a year and cost 10 million euros, but it has reached the finish line. During the renovation, all 324 hotel rooms, the lobby, the 228-seat restaurant and the common areas were thoroughly upgraded. The events area on the 10th floor has also been updated for events, meetings and conferences. The hotel’s interior designer, architect Meelis Press, shared from where he drew inspiration when creating the hotel’s interior and what challenges the very short design and construction process posed during the tense times of the pandemic.
The hotel’s concept and completely new service solution were born as a joint creation of the hotel team and focus on Tallink’s strengths, bringing together the well-known and much-loved concepts and brands both on land and at sea, in the heart of Tallinn.

Renovations of the Tallink City Hotel, located in the heart of Tallinn, included a thorough facelift of all of the 324 rooms in the hotel, the lobby, the restaurant, the conference centre and other public areas. The owner of the hotel building, VARA HTG, owned in equal parts by Infortar and Kapitel, invested almost 10 million euros in the renovations in cooperation with the hotel operator, Tallink Hotels. The construction works were completed by Merko, and the hotel will re-open on 30 June.
“We are thrilled to have successfully used these times of a pandemic to carry out large renovations and have this great end result – we owe it to the dedication and efforts of the entire team. Tongue in cheek, we are particularly glad to have managed the renovation works without losing a single customer in the process – there simply weren’t any. The hotel concept with an entirely new service solution is the creation of our hotel team, focusing on Tallink’s strengths and having well-known and loved activities and brands from land and sea meet in the centre of Tallinn. Guests are not only welcome at the hotel but also at the City Grill House restaurant and the relaxation area, and to browse Tallink Webshop’s display,” said Ave Svarts, Member of the Management Board of Tallink Hotels.

“Once a legendary House of Services, now the Tallink City Hotel is definitely a pioneer among Estonian hotels. The new hotel picks up on certain new nuances that guests require, looking more like the customers’ dreams. For instance, there is a very spacious lobby where one can spend time in different atmospheres – socialize at a long bar table, “hold hands” in the fireplace nook or retire to the quiet library. Or have a ZOOM meeting in the small glass room. We need all this and we have all this. It took a year to come up with this and make it a reality; in terms of a large hotel it sounds like a marathon at the pace of a sprinter. The construction company and we were on the same wavelength and things went smoothly,“ said architect Meelis Press.
“As the owners of the real estate, we took a rather significant risk last summer and decided to fully renovate the hotel together with Infortar and Tallink. In hindsight, we managed to turn the crisis in the tourism sector to our advantage. The hotel operator and we are really pleased with the outcome of the joint effort of everyone involved and we hope our guests will be too,” said Rait Pallo, Member of the Management Board of Kapitel and Vara HTG.

The former House of Services on Laikmaa Street from 1974 was turned into a hotel in 2004. Renovations of the Tallink City Hotel began in September 2020 and the hotel will reopen at the end of this June. After the renovations, the ten floors of the hotel will accommodate 324 rooms of various categories – classic twin rooms, spacious rooms for families, elegant deluxe rooms and impressive suites. All hotel rooms will be furbished in modern style fitting for a city centre hotel and the interior design will take its inspiration from such key words that may seem to contradict one another at first glance – heart of the city centre and close to the green outdoors, high tech and natural, fast and take your time to enjoy. The fully renovated restaurant, seating 228 people, now goes through two floors and offers flexible possibilities for organising various events. For holding events, meetings and conferences, the events’ floor, located on the 10th floor, has also been renovated.

THE FULLY RENOVATED CITY HOTEL DELIGHTS WITH A COSY WELLNESS AND RELAXATION CENTRE
Published in May 2021
As a result of complete overhaul, the fully renovated Tallink City Hotel emerges with an exciting wholistic concept, which is mainly attractive to holidaymakers. The way we understand holiday and work related travel is undergoing major shift, and in the future these two types of travel will be even more intertwined. Working remotely is becoming more and more common, which, in turn, opens up new opportunities for travelling, allowing to combine work and leisure travel even more better and efficiently.
Keeping in mind both the wishes and needs of holidaymakers, we have created a hotel concept which includes cosy possibilities for relaxation and taking time off. The smart new floorplan of the renovated hotel breathes more life into the previously under used spaces – the basement floor will have a cosy and compact relaxation and wellness area, with a maximum capacity for 15 people, with saunas and rooms for enjoying wellness treatments.
The relaxation and wellness area has three saunas – steam sauna, Finnish sauna and aroma therapy sauna. During or after visiting the sauna, we highly recommend our guests to take the opportunity to enjoy wellness treatments offered by our beauty professionals, who offer both classical and trendy wellness treatments. In-between saunas and beauty and wellness treatments, the visitors are welcome to relax comfortably by the centre’s steam fireplace.
Relaxation and Wellness Centre welcomes guests aged 18+. We invite you to take time off and enjoy professional beauty and wellness treatments with a prior booking from Monday to Sunday. Guests who stay in De Luxe room or in the Suite, the use of the Relaxation and Wellness centre is included in the price of the room. For guests staying in other rooms, the visit to the Relaxation and Wellness centre is charged extra.
Hotel guests staying in our Tallink Hotels with small children are kindly invited to visit the Aqua Spa, located in the nearby Tallink Spa & Conference Hotel. In the Aqua Spa, you have the opportunity to visit five different saunas and enjoy water fun in four different pools and heated outdoor pool. There are many fun features to enjoy in the pools, such as the water massage, waterfall, fountains, circular and counter-current pool area and so much more that appeals to families with children – features both big and small members of the family can enjoy and appreciate so much during their stay to make their holiday experience even more special.

When renovating the Tallink City Hotel, we considered the preferences of our guests and decided to bring some of Tallink’s favourite brands and concepts from sea and shore directly to the heart of Tallinn. The beloved onboard restaurant Grill House has undergone a thorough overhaul and will open its doors as the City Grill House restaurant.
The hotel restaurant will be located on two floors, expanding to the former nightclub Cellar, located on the basement floor. This allows to better accommodate a large number of guests arriving for breakfast, enables to cater to separate groups or allocate the basement floor area for special events. The two-storey spacious restaurant with open kitchen seats 228 and is conveniently flexibile for organizing various events.
The City Grill House restaurant can be characterised by key words such as the finest flavors, sharing, carefully selected ingredients, exciting side dishes, but also flexibility and combinability – customizing the order according to individual preferences and needs, sharing food and experiences.
The restaurant’s Executive Chef Kristjan Kelder has developed an original and completely new menu. An impressive selection of grilled dishes is prepared from carefully selected ingredients and roasted on a Mibrasa charcoal grill to bring out and highlight the best culinary aspects of fine ingredients – simple and clean flavors. In addition to a rich selection of meat, we serve fish, seafood, vegetarian dishes, and, of course, decadent desserts. The selection of wines carefully selected to complement the menu is abundant and includes, among other, choice selection from the popular Tallink onboard wine restaurant Bon Vivant wine list.
The City Grill House Restaurant will welcome guests from June 2021.

We are proud to present the interior solution of the renewed Tallink City Hotel – this is what our reception will look like after the renovation. The interior design of the hotel as a whole is based on seemingly contradictory keywords – the heart of the city and closeness to nature, technical development and naturalness, speed and the calm flow of time. The shades used in the interior are inspired by nature, while the house is characterised by an exciting combination of graphically impressive metal furniture, glass and light. Based on that, the result should be pleasantly personal and contribute to rest and relaxation, while adapting well to the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The interior designer is Meelis Press.
As of today, you may book rooms in the newly renovated Tallink City Hotel. We will be opening our doors to guests in June!

We are in the process of completely renovating one of our flagship hotels at Tallink Hotels – Tallink City Hotel, which was first opened in 2004 and will be reopened to our guests just in time for the 2021 spring/summer season. Following its reopening, we are confident that the 4-star hotel, situated in the most exclusive location in downtown Tallinn, will be even better adapted to the preferences and needs of our guests than before.
During the ongoing crisis, we have been keen to notice any possible changes in the preferences of our guests and are paying full attention to any such changes amidst the hotel renovation project to take these observations fully onboard.
Upon completion, located on the ten floors of the hotel, there are available 324 rooms of various categories, such as the classic twin rooms, spacious rooms for families, elegant de lux-rooms and impressive suites. All hotel rooms will be furbished in the contemporary modern style and the interior design will take its inspiration from such key words that may seem to contradict one another, at first glance: heart of the city centre and close to the green outdoors, high tech and natural, fast and take your time to enjoy.
The hotel restaurant will undergo a thorough change and reopens to visitors with completely new concept. The new restaurant will be spacious and roomy, seating 228 and has conveniently flexible possibilities to cater and organise various and special events.
For organising events, meetings and conferences, the events’ floor, located on the 10th floor will be also renovated fully and the key words there will be new and inspiring solutions. Also, other public areas and additional service areas will undergo a thorough overhaul. In compared to the previous concept, the new one should be particularly well suited to meet the needs and expectations of holiday makers.
If you are travelling with family and kids, there is also a good reason to keep your eye on the progress of the hotel renovation project, since we are giving much more consideration to such customers than before. At the end of the summer, we announced that we would start renovating Tallink City Hotel. In September, the hotel family was busy counting, marking and collecting hotel furniture that could be needed by someone. You can read more about the donation here on the same page.
In September, we started a thorough and large-scale overhaul of the hotel in the city centre. Tallink City Hotel, located in the service building, had been awaiting renovation for some time. The economic and tourism situation unexpectedly created an opportunity to renovate the hotel.
In November, we started demolishing the walls and ceilings. During the works, the hotel rooms, along with all the public areas of the hotel, will be completely renovated. The hotel will undergo renovation work until the end of May 2021, and we plan to reopen the hotel in June of next year.

The furniture and furnishing materials of Tallink City Hotel, which temporarily closed its doors this summer and started repairs in September, have reached several people in need across Estonia instead of warehouses and landfills.
At the beginning of the summer, when Tallink Group decided to close Tallink City Hotel until next summer and completely renovate it by the owners in agreement with the owners of the former service building, it was immediately clear that the furniture and furnishings that would no longer be used in the hotel could be recycled as much as possible.
In cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs, a number of institutions and organisations were found all over Estonia, to which the furniture and furnishings that were in good condition were donated; in some cases, this made it possible to provide essential services faster than planned during the current difficult period.
Of the hotel furniture and furnishings, beds, mattresses, chairs, tables, bedside tables, bedspreads, curtains were mainly reused, but the large wooden wall panels in the hotel reception desk and the huge wall mirrors in the hotel lobby also found a new home.

We are beginning a complete renovation of Tallink City Hotel in the centre of Tallinn. All hotel rooms, the lobby, restaurant, conference centre and public areas will be renovated. The renovation will be completed in May 2021 and the hotel will reopen in June next year.
The current situation in the tourism and hotel industry in Estonia and around the world makes it possible to carry out these renovation works. With this in mind, we will be ready to reopen the hotel doors for next year’s summer season and offer a new concept in the Estonian hotel market with the best accommodation experience.
